A Treatise on Poetry for Beginners by Dr A.V. Koshy – A Review

download (5)

The world of fiction was known to me and I’ve spent a good few years writing stories and articles, but recently when I joined a Facebook group named Rejected Stuff it was really when my true interest in poetry triggered. I must admit I am no way qualified to review a book which deals with the intricate grammar and detailing of poetry, that too by a master poet and critic himself like Dr. Koshy. Let’s consider this as my humble attempt at understanding a book that is extremely profound in its nature.

When I started reading this book, especially targeted at people who are beginners at poetry just like me, it was heavenly.

Dr. Koshy uses a certain kind of language which will be accessible to all; it is engaging and entertaining at the same time. I was hugely surprised at how well he has described every possible angle of poetry. It should be the bible for anyone who wants to turn into a poet and write poetry.

Rhyme, Rhyme Schemes, Sound and Imagery, Figurative Language, Form and Structure, Form and Voice, Voice and Style are discussed with flair and dexterity of a genius, I had no idea that the rules of poetry could be so well discussed and expressed before I read this book. Dr. Koshy gives examples from his own poems and also from other masters to describe what he actually means.

This book initially started as Facebook posts and later was converted into a full-fledged manual into the world of poetry. It is absolutely amazing how Dr.Koshy entwines the grammar of poetry into such beautiful yet simple language to influence his readers. Most essays or books on poetry are too pretentious and ostentatious which immediately puts off a novice reader; this book is exactly the opposite of that. It beckons its readers to delve deeper, to learn more, it inspires its readers with all its might. Dr. Koshy’s voice is fresh and full of humour, providing the oxygen necessary to understand multiple deep concepts dealt within. He genuinely understands the dilemma faced by modern poets and poetry, and provides a significant and reflective solution through this book.

A Treatise on Poetry for Beginners by Dr A.V. Koshy is a must read for all who want to learn the craft better. I have benefitted immensely from the book and I hope my fellow aspiring poets will gain from this superbly brilliant book too!
